The Selection Process — It's Not Just NEET
This is what makes AFMC unique. Unlike every other medical college in India, NEET score alone doesn't determine admission. The selection has four components:
Step 1: NEET UG 2026 Score (720 marks)
You must qualify NEET and register for AFMC on the MCC website (mcc.nic.in). Approximately 2,000 candidates (1,600 boys + 400 girls) are shortlisted for screening based on NEET merit.
Step 2: Test of English Language and Reasoning — ToELR (80 marks)
A Computer Based Test at AFMC, Pune. 40 MCQs, 2 marks each, 30 minutes. Negative marking of 0.5 per wrong answer. This tests English proficiency and logical reasoning — not medical knowledge.
Step 3: Written Examination Score Calculation
Formula: (NEET Score + ToELR Score) ÷ 4 = Written Examination Score (out of 200)
Example: NEET 600 + ToELR 60 = 660 ÷ 4 = 165 out of 200
Step 4: Interview (50 marks)
A panel interview covering general awareness, personality, interests, and hobbies. Weightage is given for:
- NCC participation at various levels
- Sports achievements (District/State/National/International)
- Wards of serving/ex-servicemen/killed in action
Step 5: Psychological Assessment Test (PAT)
Qualifying only — PAT score is not added to the merit. But failing PAT means no admission.
Step 6: Medical Examination
As per Armed Forces standards. Candidates declared unfit don't appear in the final merit list. There is provision for an Appeal Medical Board (fee: ₹40).
Final Score = Written Examination Score (200) + Interview (50) = 250 marks total.
Separate merit lists for boys and girls. Admissions offered in order of merit.
The Bond — ₹71 Lakhs
This is the number that shapes every AFMC decision. At admission, parents/guardians sign a bond agreement for ₹71,00,000.
- If you withdraw after 7 days of admission: Full bond money payable.
- If declared Non-Service Liability (NSL) on medical grounds: Bond waived, but training costs payable (currently ₹28,166/week).
- If you opt out after final MBBS: Bond must be paid in full before internship NOC is issued.
The calculation that matters: AFMC education is essentially free (paid by government). The ₹71 lakh bond is the "price" of leaving before completing your 7-year service commitment. If you serve your 7 years, you pay nothing — and earn a salary throughout.
Service Liability — What You're Signing Up For
- Short Service Commission (SSC): 7 years of mandatory service in Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS)
- Permanent Commission (PC): Service until superannuation
- Commission type (SSC vs PC) depends on vacancies and is determined by merit-cum-option at final MBBS exam
Career Prospects & Pay
AFMC graduates are commissioned as officers in the Indian Armed Forces. The career path:
| Rank | Pay Level | Promotion |
|---|---|---|
| Lieutenant | Level 10 | On commission |
| Captain | Level 10B | After 2 years |
| Major | Level 11 | After 6 years |
| Lt Colonel | Level 12A | After 13 years |
| Colonel | Level 13 | By selection |
| Brigadier | Level 13A | By selection |
Additional benefits: Military Service Pay (MSP), Non-Practicing Allowance, DA, subsidized accommodation, 60 days annual leave + 20 days casual leave, LTC, free medical for self & family including dependent parents, Group Insurance of ₹75 lakhs, CSD facility.
PG opportunities: AFMS has ~400 PG seats and 45 super-specialty seats each year. PC officers get 2-3 years study leave with full pay for advanced training in India or abroad.
Physical Standards — The Part Most Students Miss
AFMC requires Armed Forces medical standards, which are stricter than civilian standards:
Height Requirements
- Male: Minimum 157 cm (152 cm absolute minimum). Allowance of 2 cm for candidates below 18.
- Female: Minimum 152 cm (147 cm absolute minimum). Allowance of 2 cm for candidates below 18.
Vision
Visual standards as per Armed Forces requirements. Specific standards for colour vision, night vision, and refractive errors apply.
Weight
Weight-for-height charts are prescribed. Being underweight or significantly overweight can lead to rejection.
General Medical Fitness
No chronic diseases, psychiatric conditions, or disabilities that would prevent serving in field conditions. This includes conditions that may be acceptable for civilian medical practice but not for military service.
SC/ST Reservation
Up to 10 seats out of 145 are reserved for SC/ST candidates. Key conditions:
- Must qualify NEET UG 2026
- Must meet all other criteria (age, academics, medical fitness)
- Must be shortlisted for screening by DGAFMS
- Must appear for and qualify the screening at AFMC
- Separate merit list prepared for SC/ST candidates
Fees — Published With Joining Instructions
The brochure states: "Fees and other charges payable by medical cadets will be given in the joining instructions published online along with merit and waiting list."
Historically, AFMC fees are nominal (approximately ₹50,000-70,000 per year including mess and hostel) since the government bears the training cost. The real "cost" is the 7-year service bond.
What Makes AFMC Different from Every Other Medical College
- You're not just a medical student — you're a military officer in training. Discipline, physical fitness, and leadership are as important as academics.
- The interview matters. Unlike MCC counselling where rank alone decides, AFMC's interview (50 marks out of 250) can make or break your admission.
- The bond is real. ₹71 lakhs is not a formality. Leaving costs money. This is a commitment to serve.
- Career path is guaranteed. No unemployment anxiety. Promotion timeline is clear. PG seats are reserved for AFMS officers.
- The peer group is extraordinary. 145 students, all top NEET performers who also cleared interview + psychological tests. The network lasts a lifetime.
Should You Apply?
Apply if:
- You're genuinely interested in a military medical career, not just a free MBBS
- You're physically fit and meet Armed Forces standards
- You're comfortable with a 7-year service commitment after MBBS
- You have strong communication skills and personality (interview is 20% of final score)
Don't apply if:
- You're only attracted by the low fees — the bond makes it expensive to leave
- You want to start private practice immediately after MBBS
- You have physical conditions that don't meet military standards
